The Amazon.com founder's net worth broke $150bn in NY on Monday morning, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Currently, Gates who is Technology giant Microsoft co-founder is worth KSh 9 trillion, having given out Microsoft shares worth KSh 291 billion since 1996.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has surpassed Bill Gates as the richest person after Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimated his net worth reaching $150 billion (Sh15 trillion).

The Amazon.com Inc. founder's net worth topped $150bn in NY on Monday, making him the richest man in modern history.

Historically, Bezos still trails other wealthy individuals such as oil magnate John D Rockefeller and steel baron Andrew Carnegie, whose inflation-adjusted net worth would be more than $300 billion.

But Bloomberg also reported on Monday that Jeff Bezos's net worth is up to $150 billion, based on today's rise in Amazon shares. Bezos' net worth surpassed that of Gates in 1999 when it hit the $100 billion mark. That makes Bezos richer than anyone else since at least 1982, when Forbes published its wealth ranking. The stock slipped below US$1,800 in extended trading after Netflix Inc posted disappointing results, rattling tech investors. It also puts Bezos's personal fortune within spitting distance of the Walton family's $US151.5 billion, which is the world's richest dynasty.

A Federal Reserve report stated that America's top 1 percent controlled 38.6 percent of wealth in the country in 2016, as opposed to the 22.8 percent held by the bottom 90 percent.

Oxfam International found in 2017 that more than 80% of earnings went to the top 1% of the world population.

He's been giving to charitable foundations since the 1990s and even founded his namesake Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that works to better healthcare and reduce extreme poverty.

Behind Bezos on the Bloomberg index is Gates, with a US$95.5 billion fortune followed by Warren Buffett with US$83 billion.
