Donald Glover's "Atlanta" was the top comedy nominee with 16 bids, poised to take advantage of this year's absence of three-time victor "Veep".
While the show didn't retain its former awards nomination glory this year, streaming giant Netflix, which distributes "Orange Is the New Black", earned the most nominations of any channel or platform with 112, narrowly beating HBO's 108.
The 70th Emmy awards ceremony will be held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on 17 September. Silicon Valley and Curb Your Enthusiasm grabbed seven and four nominations each. "This is the most diverse class of performer nominees we've had - we're nearly up to a third, which is fantastic", Maury McIntyre, TV academy president. And even some shows that did very well in overall nominations, like HBO's "Game of Thrones", saw some notable stars absent from the final tallies. "There's still a lot of work to be done in terms of gender" and with behind-the-camera jobs, he said.
For the most part, though, this year's categories mark a pretty fair representation of TV's best and brightest, while adding drama to the battle that's been brewing to its two foremost bidders for awards prestige. Meanwhile, HBO's Thrones and Westworld nabbed 22 and 21 nominations each, while the dark comedy Barry scored 13 nods. Legend, already an Oscar, Tony and Grammy victor, could become a member of the EGOT club if he wins this Emmy.More news: Chris Weakens to Tropical Storm, Island Braces for Heavy Rain Tonight

The fantasy dragons-and-swords saga, which already has 38 Emmys under its belt, is not expected back on screens until next year. "Saturday Night Live's" "Weekend Update" stars Michael Che and Colin Jost will host.
Although it's up for top series honors, it drew only three supporting acting bids for cast members Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage. Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, and Ann Dowd are all nominated for Supporting Actress, and Joseph Fiennes is nominated for Supporting Actor.
For lead actor drama, the Television Academy nominated Jason Bateman, "Ozark"; Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright, "Westworld"; Matthew Rhys, "The Americans"; and Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia of "This is Us".
