Trump Defends Immigration Policies As Backlash Grows

People have been detained and referred for criminal prosecution, but USA rules state that children are not allowed to be held with their parents because they have not been charged with a crime.

Barack retweeted his wife's sentiment on Monday, shedding light on the thousands of children ripped from their undocumented parents and detained in isolated centers at the US - Mexico border.

Trump has blamed the situation on Democrats and falsely claimed there is a federal law forcing parents and children to be separated when they cross the border.

In an opinion piece in the Washington Post, former first lady Laura Bush, wife of the previous Republican president, George W. Bush, said she lives in a border state and appreciates the need to enforce and protect the USA borders.

While he continues to lie by saying that Democrats are at fault, Melania Trump's Father's Day statement emphasises the fact that laws are always applied with discretion and that we can be both a law-abiding country and one that "governs with heart".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently directed border and immigration authorities to implement a zero-tolerance policy for prosecuting individuals who enter the US illegally. Pope Francis posted a tweet last week that some interpreted as referring to the new USA practice of placing migrant children in centers separate from their parents. "After banging on the door and making it clear that we WILL NOT MOVE until we're allowed in, ICE is finally granting us access to see individuals who have been separated from their families", tweeted Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who represents New York's 12th District.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the plan in April, and expounded on it in May, saying his Department of Justice would partner with Homeland Security to prosecute anyone illegally crossing the southwest border and separate children from parents.

About 2,000 children have been separated from their parents or adult guardians over six weeks, according to United States authorities.

But she says, "If the Democrats are serious, they'll come together again and try to close these loopholes and get real immigration reform". "It's a crime to come across illegally and children get separated". But if they jump the border, they will be separated while they sit in jail - as are US citizens who are accused of crimes and who land in jail. "It is immoral. And it breaks my heart", Bush wrote, adding the images were "eerily reminiscent of the Japanese American internment camps of World War II, now considered to have been one of the most shameful episodes in USA history".

Hillary Clinton on Monday slammed the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" southern border policy that has left hundreds of children separated from their parents, calling it a "moral and humanitarian crisis". In a guest column for the Washington Post Sunday, Mrs.

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci also urged Trump to change course.

Both Melania's husband Donald and her stepdaughter Ivanka Trump, 36, have received criticism over the policy - notably after Ivanka posted photos with her son on her Instagram.

"Now as we watch with broken hearts, that's exactly what's happening", she said.

"That's traumatising to the children who are innocent victims, and it is contrary to our values in this country".

Democrat Adam Schiff said the government was "using the grief, the tears, the pain of these kids as mortar to build our wall. And it's an effort to extort a bill to their liking in the Congress".

The Republican-led House of Representatives may vote this week on two immigration measures - a hardline bill and a compromise measure that would limit legal immigration while also ending family separations.
