Poland vs Senegal: Teranga Lions lift African spirits

Cape Town - Senegal outwit Group H opponents Poland 2-1 in their opening Soccer World Cup encounter as they claimed Africa's first victory at the tournament in Russian Federation. There are a number of talented stars, who play for some of the biggest clubs in Europe, on both teams, which makes the match an exciting prospect to watch. Poland need to up the ante to find the equaliser from here.

Ranked eighth in the world, this is Poland's eighth appearance at the World Cup, with coach Adam Nawalka's side desperate to improve on the third-place finishes in 1974 and 1982.

The biggest worry for Poland before the game was whether their defence could keep out Senegal's attack without Kamil Glik, who is nursing a shoulder injury. Senegal's winning goals might have been a combination of the freakish and atrocious - the first deflected off both Michal Pazdan and Thiago Cionek before going in and the second was essentially caused by mistakes from Grzegorz Krychowiak and Wojciech Szczesny - but do not underestimate Mane's presence.

Playing their first World Cup game since reaching the quarterfinals in 2002, Senegal doubled their lead on the hour mark through M'Baye Niang, but in questionable circumstances.

Senegal will led by West Ham midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate but all eyes will be on forward Sadio Mane, who is coming into the World Cup off the back of a trailblazing season with Liverpool, also scoring in the UEFA Champions League final. For Lewandowski, this could well be the final World Cup he plays in where he is at the very top of his game, making it vital from his perspective that he is able to get off to a strong start. Poland have a mountain to climb if they are to reach the last 16 for the first time since 1986.
