Liverpool meet with Xherdan Shaqiri representatives over possible transfer

With Shaqiri's eyes firmly on the prize of Russian Federation 2018, his team begun talks with Liverpool officials last Friday, Bleacher Report journalist Dean Jones reports (via Stoke Sentinel).

When asked what he though about Liverpool as a club he responded by laughing and asking the interviewer why he was talking about Liverpool.

But Shaqiri can shed no light on his future yet and insists his focus must be on the World Cup.

Throughout the 2017/18 campaign, Shaqiri made 36 league appearances for Stoke, scoring eight goals and assisting a further seven as Stoke ended the Premier League season in the relegation zone.

'I can't tell you anything right now, ' Shaqiri said.

Shaqiri, a winger who was impressive with Stoke despite their relegation, is an attractive prospect given his release clause of around £12-14 million. 'I think my agents take care of my future.

"Everyone wants to compete with the best, that was one reason why I chose the Premier League, and that's why I want to take the next step now".

"I am focusing on the national team right now".

"I would love to stay in England".

They've also been strongly linked with Nabil Fekir in recent weeks but the Mirror claim that any potential deal for Shaqiri isn't linked with their interest in the Lyon attacker so Klopp is seemingly on the look out for two attackers.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is said to be keen on adding competition to his squad and sees Shaqiri as an ideal candidate to back-up his lethal attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
