The group is scheduled to return to South Korea later Tuesday after undertaking preparatory work on repairs needed within the complex.

Experts say South Korea and the United States need to hold regular drills to prepare their commanders, who change periodically, to work together smoothly in crisis situations and respond to North Korea's evolving military threats and other factors such as changes in the deployment of USA strategic assets. According to the unification ministry, the two Koreas agreed to open a liaison office for better communication.

Accounts in South Korean media differ over who exactly proposed the measure, but it came at a general level military dialogue, which hadn't happened for over a decade before.

Moon Chung-in is a special adviser to South Korea's president. He supports increased discussion with North Korea. He considers Trump's good relations with Kim and his decision to suspend the exercises as parts of a diplomatic plan that is getting clearer.

Some say the one-day summit helped extend a temporary detente on the Korean Peninsula, but others say it was light on substance and Trump made too many concessions to North Korea.

President Donald Trump's summit with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un in Singapore lasted only a few hours.

Xi said he was pleased to see North Korea's decision to promote economic reforms, adding that China's own reform and opening up process had meant the Chinese people's eyes had been open to the world.
