Inside Singapore's $20m Trump-Kim summit showcase

Daily NK, a South Korean website focusing on North Korea news, reported in 2015 that "the restrooms are not only in Kim Jong Un's personal train but whatever small or midsize cars he is traveling with and even in special vehicles that are designed for mountainous terrain or snow". By contrast, Pompeo did suggest that the US was prepared to make unspecified concessions to North Korean security concerns before the total dismantling of its nuclear program was achieved.

By prominently showing the Air China jet that flew Kim to Singapore, the reports also made no secret of China's important role behind the scenes. "Chairman Kim thanked Prime Minister Lee for Singapore's hosting of the US-DPRK Summit", the document adds.

In a statement obtained by CNN, Rodman says he considers Trump to be a friend and expressed his confidence in his ability to get the job done in their summit.

Even Mr Kim's two recent trips overseas to neighbouring China were not reported to the North Korean population until he had returned home.

As for Singapore, the White House said Trump was leaving early because negotiations had moved "more quickly than expected", but gave no details about any possible progress in preliminary talks. Mr. Trudeau especially objected to the Trump administration's justification of the tariffs, saying Ottawa isn't a national security threat to Washington.

Security is tight ahead of the summit between two unpredictable men who in the past have threatened to destroy the other's country during the stand-off over North Korea's nukes.

Mr. Pompeo praised the G-7 nations for their help getting North Korea talks set up.

The schedule also includes time for Trump to deliver a press conference before his scheduled departure at 8 p.m. local time Tuesday (8 a.m. ET Tuesday).

Trump, speaking in Canada on Saturday, said any agreement at the summit would be "spur of the moment", underscoring the uncertain outcome of what he called a "mission of peace".

"I think within the first minute I'll know", Trump said. But on the eve of the summit, he altered his schedule, opting to return at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday after a full day of meetings with Kim - nearly 15 hours earlier than previously anticipated.

And Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sought to keep expectations for the summit in check.

While advisers say Trump has been reviewing briefing materials, the president insists his gut instincts will matter most when he gets in the room with Kim.

Larry Kudlow, Trump's economic adviser, said Sunday on CNN that Trudeau's criticism had damaged Trump's prestige before the summit - and that's why Trump reacted so strongly.

Kim has shown surprising diplomatic skills in his meetings with overseas leaders this year.

They also mention the goal of his trip, a "historic first meeting with the USA president", describing not only Mr Kim's itinerary but also the fact that he used a Chinese plane to fly to Singapore, rather than his own personal jet. "And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again".
