Fallout 76 will be an online-only multiplayer game that sees players explore the desolate, post-apocalyptic wasteland just 25 years after a nuclear war. Not only that, but the game will be around four times as big as Fallout 4, which was already a pretty massive game as it is.

Many institutions we know and love aren't present or active yet - there will be no New Californian Republic, Institute, or Brotherhood of Steel - although a trailer heavily implies that the origin of this latter group will be part of the story.
In terms of how online will work, you won't be playing in the same world with every other Fallout: 76 player in the world, because that would be insane.
We now know the game will have a story mode that can be played entirely solo, though it's meant to be a group base-building and exploration experience you can also play with friends (or possible friends).

You can join your friends whenever you want and all of your progression will go with you.
