Wales beaches praised in Keep Wales Tidy Blue Flag awards


In total, 65 worldwide Blue Flags and 125 Seaside Awards (8 more than last year) have been handed out this year.

Keep Britain Tidy is presenting 190 awards to England's very best beaches, including 65 worldwide Blue Flags and 125 Seaside Awards - ranging from popular holiday spots to quiet, more hidden-away spots.

East of England: Cromer, Sea Palling, Sheringham, Mundesley, East Runton, West Runton, East Beach Shoeburyness, Shoebury Common, Thorpe Bay, Dovercourt Bay, Brightlingsea, Southwold Pier.

"Shanklin is delighted to be recognised by this prestigious award and thank all involved in achieving it - it is very much a team effort, and this recognition is a credit to all that have contributed to maintaining and improving the quality of our provision".

Keep Wales Tidy has awarded 47 Blue Flags across the country, meaning Wales has more per mile than anywhere else in the UK.

"When you see a Blue Flag raised at a beach or marina, you know that it's clean, sustainably managed and a safe place to swim".

Whitby is the only beach in Yorkshire which will be able to fly a Blue Flag, recognising its clean, safe beach with great facilities and water quality.

"Keep Britain Tidy leads the fight to create clean, plastic-free beaches".

Blackpool North beach opposite the Tower, Blackpool Central beach and Bispham beach have also been given Seaside Award status by Keep Britain Tidy. It takes an enormous amount of concerted effort by a great number of people to achieve these standards.

To be awarded a Blue Flag, beaches must comply with a number of criteria covering environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, safety and services.

This year environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy is presenting 190 awards, including 65 worldwide Blue Flags and 125 Seaside Awards (eight more than last year), with 42 beaches achieving both awards.
