Pompeo Threatens US Will 'Crush' Iran Through Sanctions And Pressure Campaign

Iran quickly denounced Pompeo's remarks as a call for "regime change", and some USA experts questioned how realistic it was to make strident demands divorced from a broader diplomatic strategy.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo demanded sweeping changes that would force Iran effectively to reverse the recent spread of its military and political influence through the Middle East to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

"Europe wants to find a way to work with us, and if you give them a little bit of opening they'll take it, but there's no opening here", said Jarrett Blanc, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former State Department coordinator for Iran nuclear implementation.

"The JCPOA was a bad deal for the United States, Europe and the entire world. And they want the countries that oppose them to have nothing", he added, indignantly.

This new list of demands and Washington's increasingly hostile rhetoric will undoubtedly result in another escalation of attacks against Rouhani.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini also responded to Pompeo, saying there is "no alternative" to the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"Following our withdrawal from the JCPOA, President Trump asked me to achieve these goals on Iran". He also accused the Iranian president of crossing the red lines set by the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in his unsuccessful efforts to preserve the deal. Dozens of European companies rejected the Iranian temptations to stay in Iran out of fear of the Trump administration which warned that whoever does not stop dealing with Iran during the next 180 days will be prohibited from dealing with the American market.

In exchange for changes, the U.S. remains willing to take action to better life for the Iranian people by removing all sanctions and reestablish full diplomatic and commercial ties, permitting Iran advanced technology towards the modernization of Iran and its reentry into the global economy, but this will only occur if and when compliance to demands is seen. A week later, Kayhan ridiculed a statement by the centrist group, Executives of Construction, which is close to Rouhani.

Iran also agreed to modify a heavy water facility so it could not produce plutonium suitable for a bomb.

In his speech, Pompeo acknowledged that many USA allies will suffer "financial and economic difficulties" because of the reimposed sanctions. If Rouhani is removed from office, he would most likely be replaced by a hardliner, a military figure perhaps from Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), who would only increase the country's hostility towards the United States and its allies.

Europeans say that Pompeo's speech does not leave much room for negotiating with Iran. We will work to prevent and counter any Iranian cyber activities and tack down Iranian operatives and their Hizbullah proxies operating the world and crush them. But other countries - including Russian Federation in Syria and Saudi Arabia in Yemen - also fuel regional instability.

Rouhani called for the solidarity and unity among the Iranians to counter the US pressures.

Trita Parsi, head of the National Iranian American Council, called most of Pompeo's demands "non-starters".

Trump repeatedly tried to drive a wedge between Iran and Russian Federation.

"The West often treats President Rouhani and Foreign Minister Zarif as "apart" from the regime's unwise, terrorist, and malign behaviours", Pompeo said, speaking directly to the Iranian people.

"The sting of sanctions will only grow more painful if the regime does not change course from the unacceptable and unproductive path it has chosen for itself and the people of Iran", Pompeo said in his first major speech since becoming secretary of state.
