Yoselyn Ortega was convicted of murder for the 2012 stabbing deaths of 6-year-old Lucia Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim.
Marina Krim had described on the stand walking through the family's darkened apartment, Nessie in tow, looking for her other two children the day of October 25, 2012. Marina Krim, the mother of two murdered children told the court, Ortega tried to destroy her family but failed. Their father was out of town.
Ortega's lawyer argued she was too mentally ill to know what she was doing when she killed the children in the family's Upper West Side apartment.
Yoselyn Ortega, 55, was convicted of first-degree murder April 18 after a two-month trial in Manhattan Supreme Court.
The only time Ortega showed any emotion was when she whimpered that she deserved mercy because now she was suddenly "sorry".
"The defendant's son, Jesus Frias, sat in front of a traumatized jury, winking and grinning at the jury members as if it were some kind of reality TV show he wants to win", the mom said.
"The defendant knows nothing of responsibility or remorse, " he added. "She has never shed a tear for the children", he said.More news: Top House Republican backs opening Pennsylvania primaries to independent voters

Ortega spoke briefly during the hearing, but her words were enough to pain the victims' parents.
"It's the people of NY who wrapped their arms around us in our darkest moment - they are what make this the greatest city in the world", he said.
Kevin Krim said the crime caused an "obliterating darkness" to descend on his family, robbing them of "the brightest and warmest of lights". To God, to Marina, to Kevin.
After her gut-wrenching six-hour testimony at her former nanny's trial, a visibly exhausted Mrs Krim screamed as she left the courtroom: "You're evil!".
Medical experts testified that Lucia fought bravely and sustained more than 30 nicks, slices and stabs from Ortega.
"As Nessie grows up, she will be asking Kevin and me deep, unanswerable questions about life that most parents avoid talking about with their kids", Marina Krim said. "It was real", Krim told jurors. Her attorney claimed she had hallucinated an order from the devil "to kill the himself and children".
Prosecutors said Ortega was driven to kill because she was jealous of Ms Krim and resentful of the cleaning she had to do. Ortega, who's from the Dominican Republic, had been recommended by her sister, a nanny for another NY family, and her background and references were faked by her family. Krim frantically tried to reach Ortega, who had worked for the family for about two years.
