Letter Carriers & Scouts Hold Food Drive Saturday

Your postal carrier will hope to pick up something at your mailbox Saturday as the mail is dropped off.

Food Drive Coordinator Bill Blumenthal said on average, about 15,000 pounds of food is donated to LA Cares through this food drive. "Last year's food drive brought in close to 21,000 pounds, so we are looking to exceed that this year".

"Go out there, all of the communities, get your food out", Kanickewa Nikki Johnson, Strategic Communicationes Specialist says.

Begun in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger is the biggest single-day food drive in the nation, harvesting 1.6 billion pounds of food since it started.

There were over 10,000 pounds of donations a year ago, she said. Postcards have been mailed to remind the public about the drive. Donations will benefit the Houston Food Bank.

Food collected locally will be delivered to the Greater Lansing Food Bank to be distributed to those in need. "We also appreciate the help we have gotten from Phillip Sparks and the Valley Lions Club along with Paul Crowder and his Boy Scouts".

Higdon added the national Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is timely.

"The response is pretty good", he said.

Lanetta Brown, who works in the Starkville Post Office, is coordinating the food drive in Starkville.

The collaboration between the scouts and the letter carriers has been going on for years, Pacheco said.
