Kumaraswamy accuses BJP of offering Rs 100 crore each to his MLAs

The BJP, which had won only 40 seats in the 2013 elections, has more than doubled its strength. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier said that the elections in the state would not result in a hung assembly, but that is clearly what's happening in Karnataka. I have given the letter to the Governor & he will call me, that is what I am hoping.

If Governor does not allow them to form the government, they plan to stage a dharna in front of Raj Bhavan.

Sources said that there was a message from the Centre to Governor Vajubhai Vala to give time for the BJP to stake their claim to form the government as it is the single largest party. We don't have numbers to form the government.

According to reports, the Congress-JD (S) combine issued an orange alert on Wednesday morning after 5 Karnataka MLAs went "incommunicado". People want him to be the CM.

Calling himself a "free man", Kumaraswamy, a former chief minister, said he was not anxious about any development that could stall efforts to form a coalition dispensation with the Congress.

While Rahul Gandhi-led Congress scored victory on 76 seats followed by JD-S 39, the two party quickly announced forming alliance to keep the BJP at bay. "I am going to meet the governor with the state Congress president and formally stake claim to form the government", he said.

Responding to MLAs missing from his party, Siddaramaiah has been quoted as saying, "All the Congress MLAs are intact".

The post-poll alliance of the Congress and the JD (S) now claims that their individual MLAs are being offered crores and crores of rupees and ministerial portfolios if they jump ship and align with the BJP which has won 104 seats out of 222 and just needs a handful or seven more to get a majority.

Ghulam Nabi Azad accused BJP of threatening Congress MLAs.

If it forms a government in Karnataka, the BJP and its allies would govern 22 of India's 29 states. If they can somehow produce a majority, they will form the government. BJP's rivals claim "Operation Lotus" was initiated by the then BJP chief minister BS Yeddyurappa where he allegedly gained the support of some opposition party MLAs using money and power.

The governor reportedly took the decision after consulting with former attorney general Mukul Rohtagi. "However, we are taking all necessary steps", Congress leader DK Shivakumar told ANI.

However, in last year's Goa Assembly elections, Congress secured the highest number of seats and BJP came second, with 17 and 13 seats respectively. The JD (S) rejected this charge and the senior Gowda, Deve Gowda, even said he and his family would disown Kumaraswamy if he joined hands with the BJP.

But analysts said the state governor would likely ask the BJP to make a bid for power because it would emerge as the biggest party in the new house. MLA R Shankar who had contested as an Independent candidate has officialy given his support to BJP, thus increasing BJP's tally to 105. Though, presently, the JD (S) has made a decision to join the Congress bandwagon, there is no guarantee that it will remain in the alliance even if the junior Gowda, H D Kumaraswamy, is called to form the government by the Karnataka governor.
