Israel's military confirmed that it targeted an observation post, calling the attack retaliation for a bomb that had been placed next to the border fence overnight.

Israeli aircraft struck two Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Saturday night, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, Palestinian security sources in the coastal territory said.

It did not confirm a second raid.

Israel's Defense Ministry on Sunday began the construction of a sea barrier on the Gaza Strip border, a move which had been decided in the days following the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict, a.k.a. Operation Protective Edge.

The military also said the air strike was payback for "continued attempts to sabotage security infrastructure, during the riots constantly led by the Hamas terror organization".

The soldiers arrived at the scene moments later and opened fire at the individuals, who in turn fled back to the Palestinian side of the fence, the Times said.

At least 119 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the protests and clashes broke out, according to figures from Gaza's health ministry.

The incidents were part of an escalation in the area and weekly protests against the crippling 12-year blockade, the inauguration of the new US embassy in Jerusalem, and the Israeli occupation.

Israeli forces have clashed with Palestinians protesting along the so-called buffer zone in the Gaza Strip.

Islamic Jihad operates with a measure of independence from Hamas, the Islamist group that has controlled Gaza since 2007 and fought three wars against Israel.

Israel says its actions are necessary to defend the border and stop mass incursions into its territory.
