AT&T and Verizon will carry the Red Hydrogen One smartphone

It's highly unusual for the top two wireless service providers in the USA to carry the rookie smartphone effort of a company like RED, whose expertise lies elsewhere.

The mysterious RED Hydrogen One smartphone will be released on two of the US's leading carriers this summer.

Building off of the modular roots of the Moto Z, the Hydrogen One features a pogo pin system that will allow for add-ons that enhance the functionality of the phone over time.

The Red Hydrogen phone will be available on Verizon and AT&T once it's released later this year.

Recently, Red stated that the phone was delayed and now coming in August.

AT&T announced that it would be carrying the RED Hydrogen One. It purports to be the first holographic phone in the world.

AT&T will offer consumers the first public look at the phone at the AT&T Shape event on June 2-3 at Warner Bros.

That's something not available on any other handset right now, whether they run iOS or Android. Even Verizon's press release echoes a similar sentiment: "you have to hold it in your hands and experience it yourself to understand why this is such a mobile game changer".

You can sign up to be notified when Verizon will have the Hydrogen One in stores at this link. If the pre-order price is any indication, though, prepare for a sizable dent in your bank account. And you won't need glasses or an augmented reality headset to view images popping out of the Hydrogen One's display, which also feature a more conventional 3D mode. According to previous communications from Red's CEO, this phone will pack in some 2017 tech, like the Snapdragon 835.
