10 missing as boat capsizes in Godavari River in Andhra

A boat with around 40 people on board capsized in the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh, according to multiple media reports. The rescue operations are now on.

Divers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), besides teams from Andhra Pradesh Fire and Emergency Services, irrigation and revenue departments have been pressed in for rescue operations.

Confusion prevails over the number of missing. "Anguished by the capsizing of a boat in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district".

"As per the information we gathered from the witnesses, more than 30 persons are still missing", he told TV channels.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu spoke to East Godavari district officials and ordered for immediate relief measures. According to an official from Rajamahendravaram, the boat mishap might have been caused by strong wind in the region.

Personnel from the Indian Navy traced the launch which is said to be at a depth of 60 feet. He said officials had been asked to take up the rescue operations on a war footing.

They could initially retrieve only two bodies, who were identified as villagers of Kondamodalu.

While 20 people managed to swim ashore, at least 10 were reported as missing till late evening, East Godavari District Collector Kartikeya Mishra said. Even before one come to terms with it, the fresh tragedy of capsizing of a boat carrying wedding troupe come as a huge shocker.
