Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The Manitoba government is raising awareness of the serious issue of sexual violence in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

We at SAS make it our mission to, above all else, believe, listen and support the victims/survivors we work with.

The first "It's on Us" campaign was started by former President Barack Obama in September 2014.

On April 18, there will be a "Show of Hands" event between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.at Racers Rock where students, faculty, and staff can place their hand print on Racers Rock as a sign of support to end sexual violence on campus. "I hope they know we have their backs in these situations", she said. "It's this conflict of needing to be recognized and talked about, but like, seeing fliers all over can be a little triggering".

"If anyone has been raped and they have never told anyone, this is the time to do it".

Burdened daily by the attack, she said she finally shared her story with close friends.

"The sex-ed program specifically leans towards abstinence only, basically telling you not to have sex and "Here are the STDs you will get if you do.' We are not given the tools to say "yes" or 'no" to sex, and those are so important".

According to Texas Council on Family Violence two in five Texas Women are victims of sexual assault.

"For somebody who's a survivor there's a number of things, I think it's a comfortability thing".

The SAAM kick-off was held this past Monday.

Rubin said its not a topic only women should be speaking up about. "I feel as if more people were educated about sex the correct way and learn that they are allowed to make decisions about their bodies, we would not have almost as many assaults". "The survey was emailed to all CC students and asks questions about sexual assault and the sexual climate on campus and whatnot". Last year, DCFOF responded to 220 sexual assault calls at local hospitals.

Outside of CC's campus, SAAM and the government's role in it's observance has become highly controversial. These heinous crimes are committed indiscriminately: "in intimate relationships, in public spaces, and in the workplace"; the report quotes an official presidential statement released by the White House.

State officials say the Office of Children's Services received more than 20,000 reports of child maltreatment in Alaska a year ago alone.

PAVSA encourages community members to learn more on sexual assault and advocate for change. I mean, he might as well declare it National Bankrupt Casino Awareness Month ... Finally, while it's all too easy for victims to feel isolated and alone in their trauma, it creates a space where victims can find and support each other, and how to access the ubiquitous external forms of support as well.
