The department said that seven inmates were killed and that 17 had injuries requiring outside medical help after multiple fights broke out around 7:15 p.m. Sunday. The fighting spread to three housing units, but no officers were wounded, authorities said.

Local fire and rescue officials said that they were responding to a "mass casualty incident" Monday morning at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, which serves as a state prison for men. The department added that the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) were assisting prison officials in its investigation.

"All SCDC staff and responding law enforcement officers are safe and accounted for", the statement said. "The burden of this lies at the feet of the warden and the state of SC". One of the two inmates accused of the crime said he killed them so he would be moved to death row.

Emergency services from several SC counties responded to the "mass casualty incident", Lee County Fire wrote in a tweet.
