Mata makes Man Utd promise as star reflects on tough weekend

Manchester City won the Premier League title as Manchester United's shock 1-0 home defeat by West Brom confirmed their rivals as champions.

It had been a traumatic week for City, who threw away a two-goal interval lead to lose 3-2 at home to United in the derby last weekend, missing the chance to become champions in front of their own fans at the Etihad Stadium.

City had won convincingly against Tottenham Hotspurs on Saturday, leaving their fate in the hands of United team waiting to engage the Baggies the next day.

Not for the first time this season at Old Trafford United started sluggishly and could have been a goal down after 12 minutes.

Even so, he is still managing to outperform Pogba in a number of key metrics over the Premier League season.

"Today's game, we've got a vital three points for us and it means so much for the football club as it does all the players. You can not say that Manchester City won the title because Manchester United lost a game".

"Paul had a yellow card and Paul's game was complicated like many others".

Pogba was substituted after 57 minutes of United's defeat, and Mourinho did not make any attempt to hide his unhappiness with the team's performance and the inconsistency of his most expensive player. City's experience won't necessarily be the same as Chelsea's obviously, but the Premier League has a way of not letting any one team get too far ahead for too long these days.

Mata sliced wide from just outside the penalty area before the ineffective Pogba was hauled off for Anthony Martial just before the hour in a desperate attempt to inject some spark into United's lifeless attack. That didn't make me feel super happy, and, in my opinion, it affected some of the people that were too happy.

When his first touch wasn't heavy, he found Ben Foster an impenetrable barrier as the West Brom goalkeeper produced impressive saves from Lukaku in each half.

"We were deservedly punished", he told Sky Sports after the game. Guardiola has won the League Cup already for City this season but a first Premier League title, to go with the three La Liga titles he won as manager of Barcelona and the three Bundesliga titles he delivered for Bayern Munich, will be particularly satisfying for the Spaniard. They defended tight and conceded possession to United, two things that wouldn't be surprising when a lower league team faces a top team.
