Predictions, theories, and rumours have run the full gamut from the highly-possible to the completely preposterous, but now the movie is finally within touching (or rather, seeing) distance.
While this is sure to irritate many Marvel fans who at this point are used to having multiple scenes during and after the credits, and will surely want to see more of the movie once it reaches the end titles, it is completely understandable given the context of the movie that only scene will be featured. Marvel decided that the Avengers were just a few years away, and started introducing the entire squad to audiences with their own films. So, everything for us is based on the story. And for the Mad Titan's part, Infinity War offers a valiant effort to develop his character so as not to fall into the underdeveloped Marvel villain trap.

If viewers don't feel connected to a character because of a lack of development, it's hard to have a response to emotional beats in their story arc. Critics advise viewers to expect the unexpected because the trailers do not do the film justice.
Civil War, Winter Soldier, Infinity War, Ragnarok, Planet Hulk - if there is one thing Marvel is doing right it's going to their well of popular storylines to adapt. Where Superman promised "You will believe a man can fly" 40 years ago, the Marvel universe has made talking raccoons and villains that instantly travel across the galaxy seem wholly organic. What happens when a movie that many are hoping to exceed expectations only manages to meet those expectations - even if those expectations mark a massive achievement for a Hollywood franchise? Thankfully, Marvel Studios, the Russos, and Markus and McFeely will be back next year with Avengers 4 to bring the first three phases of the MCU truly to completion.
