Gas prices braked in Southwest Florida over the past week, but analysts say a spring surge is still likely.

Gas prices in the Lima region have gone up 15.6 cent since last week, according to prices reported to GasBuddy.com. In fact, it fell eight-tenths of a cent in the past week, averaging $2.67 a gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 190 gas stations in the Syracuse area. He believes that gas prices may continue to fluctuate. The average price for a gallon of gas on this date a year ago was $2.40.

The highest average prices per gallon last week were reported from California ($3.51); Hawaii ($3.47); Washington ($3.16); Alaska ($3.12); OR and Nevada ($3.05); Pennsylvania ($2.88); Utah and Idaho ($2.85); and NY ($2.76). New Hampshire has seen a decrease of less than a penny, to $2.56 per gallon.

Gasoline stocks dropped 1 million bbl on the week.

Higher gas prices are mostly due to higher crude oil prices, which Patrick DeHaan, a senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy, said are being boosted because of production cuts by OPEC nations. A preview from S&P Global Platts of US data to be published last this week anticipates gasoline stocks dropped another 2 million barrels.

"Thankfully, the bulk of refinery maintenance is likely behind us, but keep in mind the volatility of the stock market has had a major influence on gas prices in the past year, so we may still be susceptible to sudden and dramatic change in USA policy and also still being susceptible to any lingering maintenance at the large refineries", he said.

The Great Lakes market is the most volatile, with the price of gas in MI dropping 7 cents per gallon from last week.
