Hyderabad: BTech student runs vehicle over man sleeping on pavement


A college student ran over a man who was sleeping on a footpath in Kushaiguda under Rachakonda police limits, Hyderabad. The incident took place in the wee hours of Monday, at around 12:30 am, when the victim, Ashok Kumar, a cobbler by profession, was sleeping outside his shop on a footpath in Kushaiguda area's DAE Colony. According to reports, she was heading home from A S Rao Nagar with three of her friends when the incident occurred. The deceased was identified as Ashok, who was a cobbler and living on the Kushaiguda footpath for several days.

After running over Ashok, the auto hit a compound wall and came to an abrupt halt, injuring the students inside the vehicle. The investigators, however, maintained that the girl in driving seat was not drunk. He sustained critical injuries.

The police, however, said the woman driving the auto was not drunk. The doctors, however, pronounced him brought dead. She was allegedly in an inebriated state, said police. All the four are engineering students.

As soon as the accident took place, the girls tried to flee the spot but the locals stopped them.

According to Kushaiguda Inspector K Chandrashekar, the driver of the vehicle, Ishanya Pathil Reddy, was found not to have consumed liquor.

People who gathered at the spot alleged that the police were trying to shield the students, as the girl who was driving the Skoda auto is the daughter of a police officer.

One of the students travelling in the vehicle is the daughter of the Malakpet Circle Inspector, and there is speculation that the police are trying to hush up the case. The police booked a case under Indian Penal Code section 304A (causing death by negligence).
