Former player Kovac to take over at Bayern

Bayern Munich's decision to name Eintracht Frankfurt tactician Niko Kovac as their new coach on Friday has not gone down well with the Frankfurt club.

While Kovac's hopes of guiding his current club to Champions League qualification suffered a significant setback in a 4-1 loss at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, Bayern had no such problems as they cruised to a 5-1 hammering of Borussia Monchengladbach.

"It must be a day to celebrate for media and fans with so many highlights", said the 72-year-old coach of the 2018 German champion. "We exploited a hole he made in the contract with Kovac, which is very professional", Hoeness said, hinting at the reported €2.2 million ($2.7 million) release clause in Kovac's Frankfurt contract". Right now or at the end of the season, which would have been possible, then we said: If we were in their situation, we would also be interested in finding out as soon as possible that our coach will be lost.

Several high-profile coaches, including Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, were linked with the Bayern job after Heynckes reportedly rejected the offer of a contract extension.

Frankfurt sporting director Fredi Bobic blasted Bayern for not getting in touch beforehand, and for the timing of its announcement.

After the end of his playing career Kovac was briefly an assistant coach in Austria. Both of us and Hasan [Salihamidzic] have tried for a very, very long time to persuade Jupp.

"We view Fredi Bobic's statement as rather outrageous", Hoeness said. "They did their thing and thought of themselves". "In this phase which is extremely important for Eintracht Frankfurt".

Bayern had appointed Kovac as he is familiar with the Bavarian side, having played for them before.

Despite relative inexperience after a stint in charge of Croatia, Kovac saved Frankfurt from relegation after taking over in March 2016 and led the team to the German Cup final the following season. James has been a consistent performer for the recently-crowned Bundesliga champions throughout the season. I informed the team this morning.

Frankfurt now lie in 6th place in the Bundesliga, five points away from Champions League qualification, with four games to go.

Kovac will need to adjust to instructing established stars at Bayern, rather than young players of promise still eager to learn, and he will be expected to maintain the club's high standards.
