Disney's Live-Action 'Mulan' Movie Adds Gong Li & Jet Li


Though director Niki Caro (Whale Rider, The Zookeeper's Wife) at one point stated that she didn't believe there were any tunes included in the live-action adaptation, she later walked back the comment and revealed that things in that regard haven't been decided yet. A remake of "The Lion King" is one of many upcoming live-action projects. Yen will star opposite Liu Yifei.

Deadline is reporting that one of the worldwide stars of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Donnie Yen, will star in the Mulan Live Action adaptation for Disney.

Jet Li is in final talks to play the emperor of China, who orders the mobilization of troops via the conscription of one male from each household. For Mulan, Gong Li will be playing the villain of the movie, a powerful witch.

Mulan is based on a Chinese legend about Hua Mulan, a young female warrior who disguises herself as a man in order to join the Chinese military, taking the place of her aging father, to protect her country from the threats they face. She's also starred in Chinese Box, Miami Vice, Hannibal Rising, and Memoirs of a Geisha.

Donnie Yen will join Disney's live-action "Mulan", reports Deadline. After the martial arts champ became a superstar in Asia on the strength of franchises like Shaolin Temple and Once Upon a Time in China, he made his Hollywood debut in 1998's Lethal Weapon 4, followed by Romeo Must Die opposite Aaliyah in 2000. The New Zealand actress has appeared in the series Filthy Rich and Australian series The Letdown and Dead Lucky. Disney is casting up the Chinese film now and has set a release date for March 27, 2020.
