Another Kathua? Surat minor held captive, brutalized, raped, killed

Even as India is yet to recover from the shock and shame of the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua, another chilling murder of an unidentified minor girl has been reported from Surat in Gujarat.

In the Unnao case, the Yogi Adityanath government has come under fire for allegedly trying to shield the influential party MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar who was accused of raping a 17 year-old girl in June last year. Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma had yesterday said that a DNA sample taken from the girl's body had been sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory for identification.

Ganesh Govekar, the doctor who conducted the post-mortem of the body confirmed the presence of "86 injury marks" on the girl's body.

Police have announced a reward of Rs 20,000 for anyone coming forward to give information about the girl.

The body of the girl was found from the bushes near a cricket ground in the Bhestan locality of Surat on April 6. The body of the unidentified girl was found in Surat earlier in April and officials there suspect that the girl, who was possibly held captive, tortured and raped over a period of time, belonged to Odisha.

Taking to Twitter, the Surat City Police provided two contact numbers - one of Surat city crime branch and other of Pandesara police station - and asked to report about any information of the girl's family or the culprit.

The police scanned the data of the missing children of several states to identify her but said that the victim's identity has not yet been established.

After huge social media outrage over incidents of gang rape in Unnao, Kathua it seems that Indian people haven't learnt anything from their misdeeds. "Our daughters will definitely get justice", he added.

The Center is now mulling the death penalty for rape of minors aged under 12, Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Maneka Gandhi said. The girl was held captive, tortured and raped before being killed. "Police have no info about her family".
