Alex Ovechkin delivers in Capitals' series-clinching win in Columbus

Washington failed to cash in on two power-play opportunities early in the second, and a goal from Columbus captain Nick Foligno had erased a 1-0 Blue Jackets deficit.

With a victory, the Capitals can move onto the next round of the NHL Playoffs, while a loss would return the teams to Washington for a Game Seven on Wednesday.

Dmitry Orlov opened scoring with a strike from the blue line, set up by defense: Holtby stoned an Atkinson re-direct attempt that looked destined to go in, and the Capitals cleared it about 30 seconds later. "It seems like we nearly like it when an opposing team's crowd gets into it". The Capitals won each of the three games in Columbus. After Ovechkin's second-period goals, Washington never relinquished a two-goal lead.

Four of the first five games in this first-round series have demanded overtime.

Alex Ovechkin scored twice, including his 50th playoff goal, and Braden Holtby had 35 saves to lift the Capitals, who never trailed after winning in overtime in Game 5 on Saturday.

Ovechkin got his second of the night when his infamous one-time shot from the right faceoff circle (his office) went past Bobrovsky and off the post to double the Caps' lead as the second period started to dwindle down. He collected a loose puck in Washington ice, skated up the left wing wall and into Columbus territory, and sent a laser of a shot over Bobrovsky's glove hand to restore the Caps' two-goal lead, 4-2 at 3:56. Stevenson got a short-handed goal 1 1/2 minutes later to pad it.

The Capitals are the first team in National Hockey League franchise history to play a combined nine OT games in the opening round of back-to-back postseasons. Eller added an empty-net goal with 14 seconds left.

Pittsburgh leads the Caps in the overall playoff game record, 38-24, and they've met for 10 series in the postseason, dating back to 1990-91.

Now, the Capitals are on the brink of eliminating the Blue Jackets from the playoffs after three straight wins. Ovechkin had five goals in the playoff series.
