UFC London: Alexander Volkov knocks out Fabrico Werdum

Stepping into the UFC Fight Night 127 headlining bout opposite his friend Fabricio Werdum, it was Volkov's opportunity to make a statement and vault into the thick of title talk. We got some big boys throwing down here, but there is good amount of well-matched fights on the undercard as well. Volkov scrambled to his feet and unleashed a flurry of punches but was taken down by Werdum a second time late in the first frame. Werdum with a right hand followed by a low kick. Volkov catches a kick and pushes Werdum down before allowing him back up. Well, that quest came to a screeching halt on Sunday at UFC London, as Werdum was finished in the fourth round by up-and-coming prospect Alexander Volkov.

Slowly but surely Alexander Volkov has scrapped his way into the heavyweight top 10, courtesy of victories over Tim Johnson, Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve.

Fabricio Werdum has been on a quest to earn back the UFC heavyweight championship that he lost to current titleholder Stipe Miocic, and to this point he has seemed on track to earn a shot down the road somewhere with wins in his last two fights. But laying on his back in the final seconds of the final round, Craig shot his legs up around Ankalaev's neck, securing a triangle choke that forced a tap with one tick left on the clock. A spinning elbow is blocked by Volkov and Werdum lands a jab and missis a takedown. Volkov was familiar with Werdum and formulated a successful game plan. "But I worked a lot on my defense.defense, defense, defense". "Our plan worked. Defend, defend, defend, and then attack". Volkov has been quite the force since making his UFC debut in November of 2016, continuing his win streak and having yet to lose inside the Octagon.

"It doesn't matter who it will be (next). Who knows? I'm here for the belt", he said.
