NO chefs, restaurants advance in James Beard awards competition

Also, Joey Baldino of Zeppoli in Collingswood; Nicholas Elmi of Laurel on East Passyunk Avenue; Cristina Martinez and Ben Miller of El Compadre in South Philadelphia; and Ena Widjojo, Maylia Widjojo, and Diana Widjojo of Hardena in South Philadelphia were among semifinalists for best chef, Mid-Atlantic.

Three San Antonio chefs made the James Beard semifinalist list of 2018 Restaurant and Chef Award, announced February 15 - chefs Diego Galicia and Rico Torres of Restaurant Mixtli and McHugh. The fine-dining spot on Farwell Ave. with a seasonal menu was a semifinalist for Best New Restaurant, a national award, in 2014.

She won a James Beard in 2016 for Outstanding Culinary Host. The category is open to chefs in Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Florida and Puerto Rico.

Cogswell, who is originally from North Carolina, now acts as Zahav's pastry chef.

This year's nominees for "Best Chef: Midwest" include three chefs from Minneapolis (Steven Brown of Tilia, Gavin Kaysen of Spoon and Stable and Ann Kim of Young Joni) and two from Milwaukee (Karen Bell of Bavette La Boucherie and Justin Carlisle of Milwaukee). Gerard Craft of Niche won "Best Chef: Midwest" in 2015, and Kevin Nashan of Sidney Street Cafe took the same award past year. Landau co-owns the restaurant with wife Kate Jacoby. Vedge marked six years in business last Fall.

Media winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in New York City on April 27, and the restaurant winners will be announced in Chicago on May 7. Also at the 2017 James Beard Awards, Gioia's Deli was one of five restaurants nationwide recognized as an "America's Classic."
