Man tries to stop hit-and-run driver in Miami with sledge hammer

Per a police report, 25-year-old Maxwell Lagutenko hopped a median and slammed his SUV into an oncoming vehicle. Although the crash involved several vehicles, no injuries were reported, Miami police said. Moments before, another driver got out of his white van and broke every window of the SUV with a sledgehammer.

A hit-and-run driver's auto was attacked by an angry mob who battered it with sledgehammers after he tried to flee the scene of a huge crash.

Several people, including one armed with a sledgehammer, allegedly attacked a fellow motorist suspected of hitting several cars with his SUV before fleeing, according to ABC Miami affiliate WPLG-TV.

A video captured an intense scene in Miami that unfolded over the weekend after a vehicle crash.

Right away, we see a couple of people get in front of the vehicle and tell Lagutenko to stop while trying to open his doors.

The driver was later taken into custody though, at which point a cop remarked that he looked "to be high on narcotics".

Eyewitness Anthony Jiminez, who saw the drama told abc10: 'You have a crash, you stop. "You have a crash, you stop".

That's when other drivers get out of their cars and try to stop him by shouting and banging on the windows.

The arrest report said Lagutenko seemed to be under the influence of drugs.

Lagutenko was charged with reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage, and fleeing and eluding a police officer.

Police also urged people not to take the law into their own hands.
