Helicopter crashes in New York City's East River

A local tour helicopter crashed into the East River near Gracie Mansion late Sunday afternoon.

"Five people have been recovered by New York City Police Department and the New York City Fire Department divers and their conditions are now unknown", the statement said.

The helicopter is a Eurocopter AS350, an FAA spokesperson said.

Video and photos posted on social media showed several police and fire boats shining their lights on the water.

It's in the water near East 90th Street and went in around 7 p.m. NYPD and FDNY divers are on scene and in the water, the mayor's spokesman said.

Emergency personnel have launched a search and rescue operation.

"At least one survivor, at least two fatalities".

The pilot was pulled from the water alive, the officials said. Helicopters fly people around the city for business, traffic reports, medical reasons and tourism.

A crash in October 2011 in the East River killed a British woman visiting the city for her 40th birthday.
