ECP moved against PML-N's registration under Nawaz's name

The plea was filed today after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified as president of PML-N as a three member-bench of the apex court ruled that a disqualified premier could not retain office of a political party.

"The Election Commission of Pakistan must de-notify PML-N until the Supreme Court's decision of July 28 is intact".

Nawaz was removed from his position in PML-N after Supreme Court announced its verdict on petitions challenging the Elections Act, 2017 ruling that a person disqualified under Article 62 and 63 can not serve as the head of a political party.

The CWC meeting, to be chaired by PML-N Chairman Raja Zafar-ul-Haq, will be held at 11am at the Model Town secretariat of the party.

Shehbaz Sharif, 66, born in Lahore, who is serving as the Punjab chief minister for the third time, is being considered as a wise, visionary and industrious leader. In 2006, he was again elected as the party president.

The petitioner also asked the ECP to bar Sharif from taking part in any meetings of the PML-N. As the NAB cases against Mian Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz are proceeding at a fast pace and in case of adverse judgement, the party would have faced serious crisis. He is the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif, who had to resign as prime minister in July past year in the high-profile Panama Papers scandal.

"Begum Kulsoom would have been the best choice to succeed Nawaz Sharif but since she is not well and is recovering from throat cancer (lymphoma) in London, Shahbaz Sharif has become the ultimate choice although some close to Nawaz have reservations (about him)".

With the Senate elections are being held in one week, the party is now in the process of organising its voting strategies with a significant number of members of the electoral college busy in the process.

The top PML-N leadership including Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Prime Minister Azad Jammu & Kashmir Raja Farooq Haider, Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana, Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Khawaja Saad Rafique, and Mushahidullah Khan among others attended the meeting.

Nawaz has already nominated Shahbaz for the prime minister candidate if PML-N wins this year's general elections.
