Black Panther,' 4 weeks in, tops 'A Wrinkle in Time'

A month after Black Panther showcased black excellence in the form of a superhero movie, A Wrinkle in Time is hoping to do the same through a beloved American children's novel.

The film's opening in China - the world's second biggest market behind the U.S. - pushed its global total past the $1 billion mark that only 32 other movies have reached. Well, the movie got off to a decent start last night, making $1.3 million in Thursday previews.

The Guardian's Amy Nicholson was similarly critical, saying "A Wrinkle in Time feels like a product molded by a megacorporation too tense to hand over the factory controls". As for its overall opening weekend haul, A Wrinkle in Time's total is expected to be between $44 million and $45 million.

That could still all change, though, with a telling two days still to go. Movie critics praised the visual imagination of A Wrinkle in Time and its messages of diversity and empowerment.

Despite looking it like A Wrinkle in Time will do okay at the box office, reviews for the movie haven't been as kind, as it now ranks at 42% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while Metacritic has it scored at 53.

If you need us, we will be sobbing over this lovely friendship.

Ava opened A Wrinkle in Time in the USA yesterday, and Ryan penned an "ode" to the director of the film starring Oprah Winfrey, calling her a "pioneer" for "inclusion, equity and representation".

"Meg Murry and her little brother, Charles Wallace, have been without their scientist father, Mr. Murry, for five years, ever since he discovered a new planet and used the concept known as a tesseract to travel there". The film also stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Zach Galifianakis.
