Trump tweets on lives 'being shattered ... by a mere allegation'

The president's inclination to reject accusations against him goes beyond those lodged by women, including, most notably, allegations that his presidential campaign colluded with the Russians.

"When I return to Washington, D.C., I'm going to look into the matter, and I'll share my counsel with the president directly", Pence added.

Trump's comments have set off a firestorm at a time of national conversation about the mistreatment of women.

Mr Sorensen has been accused by his former wife of being violent and emotionally abusive, while Mr Porter faces allegations of domestic abuse involving two ex-wives.

New allegations against Lewandowski surfaced late past year, after the singer Joy Villa, a Trump supporter, filed a sexual assault complaint accusing Lewandowski of slapping her on the buttocks at a holiday party. Kelly reportedly knew for months that Porter had not obtained a full security clearance due to the allegations. Porter is said to have abused.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly was singled out for criticism.

The Washington Post first reported Sorensen's resignation Friday evening, and reported that his ex-wife, Jessica Corbett, alleged that "he ran a vehicle over her foot, put out a cigarette on her hand, threw her into a wall and grasped her menacingly by her hair while they were alone on their boat in remote waters off Maine's coast, an incident she said left her fearing for her life". Sorensen has denied his wife's claims.

A second White House official has resigned amid accusations of domestic violence.

As a candidate, Trump acknowledged that he had made lewd comments about grabbing women's crotches after The Post reported on a recording of Trump joking about doing so. "And we hope he has a wonderful career", Trump said Friday, adding that the aide had vehemently maintained his innocence. "These women deserve to be heard - not silenced and waved away!" The reports also included a photo showing one of his exes with a black eye.

Noting Trump wished Porter luck and said he did a good job, Biden said, "That's like saying, 'That ax murderer out there, he's a great painter.' " Biden explained that sexual misconduct should not be explained away by the abilities or skills someone has. He did not elaborate. "The President is quick to doubt and slow on compassion".

Kelly has indicated he would step aside if he lost the faith of the president.

The firestorm comes in the wake of congressional efforts to address sexual harassment and assault on Capitol Hill.

The Senate's most senior member, Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont, also expressed support for victims. Hicks has become one of Trump's closest confidants, and while the president has groused about her involvement in the Porter flareup, he had not suggested ousting her, according to the two people familiar with his private discussions.
