The US women's hockey team avenged their losses to Canada in three of the past four Olympics gold medal matches by winning a gold of their own in a thrilling shootout. Team USA won the shootout, thanks to Jocelyn Lamoruex-Morando who scored in the first round of the extra round and to US goaltender Maddie Rooney blocked Team Canada's Meghan Agosta.

Canada has won the last four Olympic gold medals. The second period was a sleepy blur as I shook it off - much like it was for the Americans, I suppose, who led 1-0 after one period but trailed 2-1 after two.

Gigi Marvin celebrates after defeating Canada in a shootout to win the women's hockey gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 on February 22, 2018 in Gangneung, South Korea.

Monique Lamoureux-Morando upped the ante with a breakaway and made it a nailbiter as she tied it 2-2 for the American's less than seven minutes into the third.

In the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, Canada and the US team battled it out on the ice, similar to last night, but after going into overtime, the Canadian team took home the gold.

Germany pulled off another stunning upset to advance to the men's hockey gold medal game, defeating Canada in the semifinal 4-3 on Friday.

Maddie Rooney made 29 saves for the win against their archrival.

The U.S. beat Canada for gold in a shootout.

Rooney, though, was the most instrumental player in the Americans' victory. "We just told the skip that we had a lot of faith in him, and he knows that when we say that, we really believe it".

Koe said he felt the team had done all the right things, despite the hard result. Hilary Knight scored the first goal for the Americans in the waning moments of the first period, giving them a lead that Canada would quickly vanquish in the second period with a pair of scores. Better awareness of time and place might have been nice, but most of us would have wanted to do exactly what Larocque did.
