Serena Williams won't play Fed Cup Saturday singles matches

The American will make her competitive return to tennis at the Fed Cup this weekend after giving birth to her first child in September.

The United States play the Netherlands in North Carolina on Sunday. That's a different feeling for me. "I definitely have. Yeah, just trekking on, we keep doing the same thing". Williams later revealed she was pregnant during that tournament.

The nominations for tomorrow's matches could yet change, however.

U.S. captain Kathy Rinaldi said she expects Williams to make a smooth transition in her return to competitive tennis.

"We'll wait and see how tomorrow goes and then we'll make our adjustments, if any", Rinaldi said Friday.

Play begins on Saturday with seven-times grand slam champion Venus Williams facing world number 124 Arantza Rus followed by a clash between American world number 17 Vandeweghe and world number 108 Richel Hogenkamp.

Some of that struggle was apparent during an exhibition match at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi in December, where she lost to French Open Champion Jelena Ostapenko.

But that is no indication of Williams' inevitable return to singles action after the 24-time Grand Slam champion confirmed she was undecided over her participation in this year's three remaining majors.

Serena Williams makes a backhand return to her sister Venus during the women's singles final January 28, 2017 at the Australian Open.

The 36-year-old added of her future ambitions: "I have long-term goals obviously, but right now my main goal is just to stay in the moment".

Also credited for a newfound sense of zen was her family life with baby Alexis and husband Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit whom she Wednesday in November. "It's a totally new experience".

"She's been really, really positive", Williams said. You have to get used to that and get in the rhythm of that. "I think it actually is a really ideal opportunity to try to come back".

Serena's sister Venus Williams and CoCo Vandeweghe are set to contest the singles rubbers for the US.

'Actually, I think having a baby might help. "She's wonderful. She does everything herself".

Venus Williams, meanwhile, will be seeking to recover from her first-round loss in Australia. I want them, but I don't need them.

Serena Williams acknowledged there have been "a lot of ups and downs" in her comeback as she mentioned "fighting against all odds to be out there and to be competing again".

Serena boasts a strong Fed Cup record, with a 13-0 singles mark that includes winning 26 out of her 28 sets as well as a 3-1 doubles record.

Williams had opted against trying to defend her Australian Open title this year.

Serena Williams has not competed in a Fed Cup tie since April 2015. "Maybe she wants to peak for Wimbledon, that would be her best chance at a Grand Slam".

"She played an exhibition and it's incredible".
