Kings purchase defenseman Dion Phaneuf in commerce with Senators

In the four-player trade with the Senators, they sent Gaborik and center Nick Shore to Ottawa for Phaneuf and Nate Thompson. Phaneuf was paired with Alec Martinez on the second unit, so it wouldn't be surprising if that's his role when he makes his Kings debut on Thursday. I've got nothing but nice things to say about the city of Ottawa, about the organization and about my time here.

Ottawa coach Guy Boucher said he has seen a player pulled from a game before, but that it made an odd night even odder for the Senators. "It's a business, it's a tough part of the business".

The Senators were so eager to move Phaneuf that their franchise took back Gaborik, who, at age 36, is virtually useless.

Angry after that loss, the Blackhawks tried to turn up the intensity Tuesday night in Las Vegas. "Nick is a hard-worker who came up through our system and has developed into a solid National Hockey League player".

Phaneuf signed this $49 million, seven-year contract when he was with Toronto on New Year's Eve 2013. Right now, Gaborik probably has more to offer but since he's older he may fall off drastically over the next few seasons, while Phaneuf may be serviceable for a few more seasons.

With Pierre Dorion being signed to a three-year contract extension, owner Eugene Melenyk has given his blessing on a rebuild. He said a $68 million payroll was "way too much over a revenue base that we have" and he was exhausted of bankrolling team operations. They could be a very busy team at the trade deadline, and Stanley Cup contenders like Tampa Bay, Nashville and Winnipeg - we refuse to call the expansion Vegas Golden Knights a true Stanley Cup-worthy team - could be sniffing for Senators in the coming weeks. But in the meantime, winger Mike Hoffman, center Zack Smith and perhaps center Derick Brassard are among the many players who could move. He has this season, and three more remaining on his contract. On the other hand, former Blues captain David Backes is gathering steam in Boston after moving past his earlier abdominal surgery. Phaneuf had 228 points in 378 games over five seasons with the Flames before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2009-10. Our Town's Patrick Maroon is drawing trade offers as the Edmonton Oilers fall ever closer to mathematical death in the Western Conference playoff race. Maroon is headed toward free agency.

For a team that wants to shed salary, this is sure a curious move. The Kings are now playing the Carolina Hurricanes.

Dowd, 25, has four goals and 11 assists for 15 points in 48 games this season.

The Predators appear likely to pick very late in the first round, so nobody would be shocked if GM David Poile spent that pick to rent Rick Nash from the Rangers.

Gaborik, 35, has been limited to 29 games this season because of injuries.

Well, the real Blackhawks are in dead last in the Central Division with a 24-25-8 record, and they have lost seven straight games. Chicago was winless in three games against the Golden Knights this season. It carries an AAV or Cap hit of $7 million per season.
