'I'd Love' Another Government Shutdown Over Immigration

Senators are dismissing the proposal as "misguided", with Sen.

"Our legislation, which already has broad support in the House of Representatives, would address the most urgent priorities of protecting DREAMers, strengthening border security, alleviating the backlog in immigration courts, and addressing one of the root cause of illegal immigration".

Congress faces a Thursday deadline to pass a new government funding bill or risk another government shutdown.

In September, Trump announced the "wind-down" of the DACA program with an expiration date of March 5.

McCain and Coons introduced their measure believing that the only potential deal in the Senate is a narrow one focused on legalizing "dreamers" and authorizing the Department of Homeland Security to draw up a comprehensive southern border plan.

As it now stands, negotiations to raise the so-called budget caps and lock in a two-year funding agreement that provides a significant boost in defense spending, a Republican priority, and non-defense discretionary spending, a Democratic priority, is inching closer to the finish line.

Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer said that if the House passes a short-term funding measure with long-term defence funding and sends it to the Senate, where it must pick up some Democratic support to pass, it "would be barreling head-first into a dead-end". Will Hurd (R-Texas) and Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.).

The bipartisan piece of legislation provides recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, commonly known as "Dreamers", an opportunity for citizenship while ordering a study to figure out what border security measures are needed, said a report in the Wall Street Journal.

On Tuesday, Trump amplified Kelly's comments, tweeting that "nearly 7 in 10 Americans support an immigration reform package that includes DACA, fully secures the border, ends chain migration & cancels the visa lottery". Pentagon funding would be set at $584 billion, an increase of about $30 billion.

New legislation was introduced Monday on Capitol Hill that could help address border security issues, while also solidifying the status of dreamers. The plan would need to include a projected cost per mile for any changes.

Last month, he proposed letting 1.8 million Dreamers stay in the country and become citizens in exchange for $25 billion for the wall, curbs on family-sponsored immigration, and an end to a visa lottery program. "I think both sides learned that a shutdown is bad".

"There's no education in the second kick of a mule", McConnell said about the short-lived shutdown. Lindsey Graham saying, "that'd be a real loss", but the persisting rift between Democrats and Republicans in both houses continues to make a permanent decision hard to come by. During his 2010 reelection campaign, he vowed to "complete the danged fence" across Arizona's span with Mexico.

But he says he's willing to negotiate.

House Speaker Paul Ryan underscored this dilemma in a press conference Tuesday morning, flatly declaring that he would refuse to take up any immigration bill that does not have the President's blessing.

Coons has been an eager participant in recent bipartisan talks to end a partial government shutdown and broker a compromise on immigration policy.

Rodgers told reporters that the House GOP wanted to advance a bill addressing immigration broadly, including adjustments to legal immigration programs.

Trump's fellow Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress, are also eager to keep spending and immigration separate. "We'll do a shutdown, and it's worth it for our country", the president said at a White House roundtable focusin on immigration issues.
