Community advocates seek to improve Black History Month education

This collection features Martin Luther King Jr. funeral program, a signed checked from Alex Haley for the TV series "Roots", a book composed of paper doll versions of Martin Luther King Jr. and his family and other artifacts that contribute to the importance of Black History Month.

"We've been doing a huge spectrum of activities here from political to cultural to entertainment", said Ford, who conducted research about SRU's involvement with Black History Month.

The Golden State Warriors began their celebration of Black History Month with a T-shirt giveaway at Tuesday's game.

She hopes to see students discussing prominent black Americans and leaders, and having discussions about how students will apply lessons into their daily lives.

Santina Lokonobei, UAAS co-president and senior biology major, said she's excited to get students involved in Black History Month. Matthews, who is also founding president of the USCTI, will travel to Albany on Wednesday, February 7 to be the keynote speaker for the New York State Office of the Comptroller's celebration of national African American History Month.

Towner so far has been pleased with the response.

"The military has been an engine for change in American society, so seeing how change happened in that space tells us something about America but also about the possibility for change in other spaces", Stahl said.

Last year, Morissa Ellis, the vice-president equity of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa said at the winter General Assembly that she didn't see much participation in Black History Month events on campus, including by some members of the SFUO executive and its Board of Administration (BOA).

"In addition to the scheduled events, we're displaying accomplishments of 18 influential African-Americans on monitors in the Peter Miller Community Technology and on social media".

Harvard-educated historian Carter Woodson started the black history movement and what is now known as Black History Month in 1926, correcting the misconception that African-Americans' only history is a slaves and not achievement.

In the past and present, VSU's Archives Department, stationed in Odum Library, have held art exhibits and special collections in order to commemorate Black History Month. They said the designation allows for the contribution of blacks to be ignored for the other 11 months of the year.

Watson said, "We've worked our lives for this".

February 24 - Gospelfest will be held in the OAB auditorium from 5 to 7 p.m.

The African Student Association (ASA) also organizes events to educate students about African culture. All events occur from noon to 1 p.m.in Ralph Scriba Conference Center Room CTC 124-125. That will be followed by the university's first black Greek step show at 7 p.m.in the ballroom of Billingsly Student Center.

St. Thomas University will host its first Black History Month panel on February 8 at 6 p.m in Kinsella Auditorium.
