"Some members will be bringing survivors of sexual assault and advocates as their guests", an aide to Representative Lois Frankel (D-Fla.) told NBC News. One lawmaker who spoke to NBC said Democrats would be "no better" than Republicans if they retaliated in kind at the State of the Union.
Capitol Hill also was inundated late a year ago with allegations of sexual harassment by lawmakers and senior aides, prompting a debate over how best to hold offenders accountable. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., and John Conyers, D-Mich., all resigned their seats amid allegations of inappropriate conduct with women.
A number of Democrats told NBC that they were not aware of any discussion of inviting victims of Trump's alleged harassment to the address, but said that invitations would be extended to other survivors.
The wave of allegations of sexual misconduct have already resulted in resignations from members of Congress, and have sparked debates about the unique rules that Congress has established for itself when it comes to sexual harassment or assault charges.
