Spartans struggle again, beat Rutgers in ovetime

The Spartans (16-2, 4-1) are in a lull after losing to Ohio State on Sunday and needing overtime to beat Rutgers at home on Wednesday.

"This team [Michigan State] poses a lot of problems with the talent that they have", Pikiell said.

"He has to be more selfish", Izzo said. Bridges was absent for the first 30 minutes, not scoring a point until about eight minutes to go.

Izzo is publicly and privately saying he has to play more selfishly to create more shots for himself instead of passing so often to teammate.

Michigan State is led by Miles Bridges, who is averaging 16.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while Nick Ward is adding 14.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest.

McCutcheon made successive 3-pointers during the pivotal third-quarter surge, and the sophomore's long-range jumper with 6 minutes left made it 69-58 - effectively ending any hope Maryland had of making a comeback.

Bridges' first bucket of the contest game at the 7:41 mark in the second half, attacking the bucket and finishing with an acrobatic, left-handed finger roll.

With a chance to win, Sanders missed a shot near the top of the key with a second left in regulation.

"We try to prove every night we're capable of playing the team we're up against and I think tonight we proved that", Sanders said. MSU held a 10-point lead at one point in the half, but after the Scarlet Knights cut the deficit to seven, they took a 32-25 lead with them into the locker room. "... As long as we come out there and play our basketball and play as hard as we can, we can win some games".

Michigan State's men's basketball team returns home to the Breslin Center on Wednesday, Jan. 10, hosting Rutgers in a Big Ten Conference game. They included Antonio Smith, David Thomas and Mat Ishbia from the 2000 national championship team and Chris Hill from the 2005 Final Four squad. The public betting is strongly with Michigan State and I agree with them.

"I'm gonna push Miles, and I told him that after the game", Izzo said. "They play tough. They play physical with a chip on their shoulder". "I love MI. I don't care about any other, I don't hate any other team". We can go out and win this game. Bridges didn't have his aggressive, look-to-score attitude when the Spartans needed offense most, shooting just 40% as a team in the half.

Outlook: Michigan State has won five of the past six meetings and three of the past five games in East Lansing by at least 10 points.

"Maybe everybody got a little fat and sassy", Izzo said.

The in-state rivals - Michigan State is ranked No. 4 and Michigan is unranked - face each other on Saturday at the Breslin Center, in their only regular-season meeting of the year.
