The police, scanning CCTV footage found out that Jain was last seen exiting the JNU campus from its Gate number 4.

The Delhi police has started investigating the case of a Ph.D. scholar from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou), who has allegedly gone missing from Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, the police said on Wednesday. Mukul was pursuing PhD from JNU's School of Life Sciences.

Family members said that Jain was not a regular student at the university and it was unlikely that he could have fallen out with someone. He had told his friends that he was going somewhere.

"We have spoken to the family of the missing student but they have not been able to provide much information", Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Milind Mahadeo Dumbere said.

IGNOU's research unit director Kaustuva Barik confirmed that the student was registered with IGNOU.

After missing report, the management has sent out a notice asking anyone to notify the security staff of any known whereabouts.

The police, however, do not suspect any foul play.

Najeeb Ahmed, a JNU student, had also gone missing from campus on October 15, 2016 following a scuffle.

Over a month after the incident, his mother moved the Delhi High Court, seeking directions to the police to trace her son.
