Mesut Ozil 'close to signing a new Arsenal contract', says Alan Smith

Everybody knew that it was obvious that Alexis Sanchez was desperate to leave in the summer and he made little contribution to the Arsenal team until December, when this current window was approaching, so we have had a disrupting influence in the squad all season.

So for this uphill and long battle, as well as the League Cup and Europa League run, Arsenal will need their best players, and while Sanchez is on the verge of heading up north, keeping Ozil will be a huge boost for the Gunners.

Ozil has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, although reports have claimed that Jose Mourinho's side would prefer to sign the midfielder as a free agent.

Ozil is on Manchester United's shortlist.

After news emerged of his new deal, plenty were outraged by the decision.

"Mesut loves it here". We want him to stay.

"The problem with Jack Wilshere is his fitness and his injuries and his reliability".

Well, perhaps he should have thought of that when he let three of his best players get into the past year of their contracts, and tried to persuade us all that this would be the best for the club?

"I've worked with him and I've got no allegiance to Jack Wilshere or Arsenal Football Club and this is a fantastic player and talent, who is a must for England if he is fit and playing well".

The 26-year-old's deal is due to expire this summer but the midfielder has already expressed his desire to stay at the club.

The new deal though would mean that Wilshere would take home £90,000 a-week, with "heavy" incentives making up the rest.

Both parties are expecting an agreement to be reached and the two players could be signed by midday on Friday.
