IHome makes a suspiciously familiar Google Assistant-powered smart bedside speaker

You probably just read the announcement from Google about Assistant coming to smart displays, which is really just an awkward way of saying that there will be Google Assistant-powered smart speakers with displays. Think YouTube, Google Photos, Duo for video calling and more.

Google is stepping up its AI virtual assistant game by bringing its Assistant to a host of third-party devices - including smart displays, speakers, and more.

Lenovo's first-ever Smart Display is powered by a Qualcomm SDA 624 processor, which is a part of Qualcomm's newly-announced Qualcomm Home Hub Platform.

Neither Apple Inc's assistant Siri nor Microsoft Corp's Cortana are now available on a speaker with a tablet-like display.

The Lenovo Smart Display makes using technology at home more convenient, intuitive and, shared.

However, the real stuff powering the device would be Google Assistant with the new smart displays just acting as another hardware extension of Google's AI backed digital assistant program. This way you can explore and discover new things to do with the Google Assistant. Pricing is not official, but Lenovo is aiming at $199 for the 8-inch model and the 10-inch model at $249.

If Google's Home smart speakers all had a place in your house, the Lenovo Smart Display's place would be in the kitchen. Like Amazon's Echo Show, these smart displays are created to sit stationary on a counter, table, or desk.

These upcoming Smart displays are basically 7-inch to 10-inch touchscreens with an integrated speaker and a mic-array.

Software and security updates can be pushed to installed devices through the Google Cloud, helping OEMs to quickly and efficiently add new features, fix bugs, and update security while reducing cost of product life cycle maintenance - even at global scale. Lenovo teamed up with Google on this and although it doesn't have the sexiest of names, it has all the hallmarks of a "Made by Google" device, which is great. There is also a 5 MP front-facing camera for video calls, along with a dedicated camera shutter button if you ever need to take a selfie. The 8-inch Smart Display comes in a light-gray color scheme, while the 10-inch model is mostly white with a bamboo-colored back panel. This will allow users to activate the Assistant with a tap and change music, listen to notifications or make calls. Google assistant is also compatible with more than 1,500 smart home devices and accessories.
