Singer-songwriter Sampha, who won the Mercury Prize past year, competes with Dua Lipa and rappers J Hus, Loyle Carner and Dave in the British breakthrough act category. Grime star Stormzy, singer Rag'N'Bone Man and rapper J Hus join her and Sheeran for the best album prize.
Taylor Swift, Pink, Lorde, Alicia Keys and Björk were all nominated for best worldwide female, with Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Childish Gambino (the stage name for Donald Glover), Beck and DJ Khaled nominated for best global male.
In the global categories, Foo Fighters, Haim, The Killers, LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire are up for best group.
At the ceremony to announce the nominations, Jorja Smith was also revealed as the victor of the 2018 critics' choice BRIT Award.
The 2018 Brit Awards will take place 21 February at the O2 Arena in London, and the categories video of the year and breakthrough act are open to voting at the official website.
