Chevrolet Silverado Unveiled, Drops 450 Pounds And Gains A Diesel Engine


General Motors unveiled its redesigned 2019 Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup truck in advance of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Saturday. It's Chevy's closest competitor to the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 Rebel.

A new Custom Trailboss is also in the works for the 2019 Silverado, which is categorized as a "high value" truck and will sport a Z71 Off Road Package, 2-inch suspension lift and 18-inch wheels.

More improvements have been made to the truck's aerodynamics.

The Silverado is 1.6 inches (41 mm) longer than its predecessor and rides on a wheelbase that has grown by up to 3.9 inches (100 mm). That means more space in the cargo box, and in the cab. The sensors that were once integrated into the taillamps have been repositioned to the rear bumper so that there are no dead spots in the 2019 Silverado's lamps. The shape of the front end has been improved to duct air around the tires, while the shape of the roof and the shape of the tailgate have been created to move air smoothly over the bed.

The Silverado's frame weighs 88 pounds less because it's made of lighter yet stronger high-strength steel, GM says. Despite this strategy, all doors and hood are made of aluminum, while the bed is rolled steel.

The frame, cab, and bed remain steel, with various individual structural pieces and running-gear components of other materials, including second-stage springs made of composite material-just as they are on the Corvette sports vehicle.

As for the bed, there Chevrolet has some fighting talk for Ford.

The Silverado is the second-best selling vehicle in the US and is outsold only by Ford's F-Series pickups.

The truck bed is nearly 7 inches wider than the previous model and the short box is 63 cubic feet. Twelve of them are fixed and can handle 500 pounds each - twice the maximum capacity of the tie-downs in the outgoing Silverado. This is important marketing point given the literal beating Chevrolet has given the F-150's aluminum bed in its advertising, by dropping a load of rocks and a toolbox into one to depict how it can potentially be punctured more easily than steel. 120V AC outlets are optional. "It's like the head of a good hammer, it's the end that does all the work", Mark Reuss, GM's executive vice president of global product development, said as he was flanked by three of the four 2019 Chevrolet Silverados on the stage at Eastern Market Saturday night. What remains to be seen is how much power the new 3.0 liter Duramax diesel engine can actually deliver against Ford's Power Stroke.

The Silverado will stick with V-8s as its top-line engines, announcing that its 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter workhorses become more efficient with "dynamic fuel-management" - the engine's electronic brain chooses between one and eight cylinders, depending on need. Technology-savvy customers are further offered 4G LTE with Wi-Fi connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, as well as wireless phone charging. The knobs and controls have been enlarged and textures, to give more grip when you're wearing gloves, and there are hidden storage cubbies around the cabin, including a tray under the rear seat.
