5 dead, 2 missing after avalanche hits JK's Kupwara


"Last evening a BRO official was killed and eight others went missing after a passenger taxi, a BRO vehicle, two officials and few bystanders were hit by avalanches that drifted from mountain near Sadhana Pass on Kupwara-Tangdhar", a police official said. Multiple avalanches struck Khoni Nallah and swept away 7 to 9 persons. The authorities today confirmed that five dead bodies have been recovered including that of senior "beacon" officer of the Border Roads Organisation.

In a rescue operation, two people have been safely evacuated, whereas two more are believed to be trapped.

Police sources said that a red color passenger vehicle was buried under snow on Friday late afternoon.

"Yes, we, too, received information of an accident and we rushed a police team for the rescue". The deceased has been identified as M.P. Singh.

A search and rescue operation was launched but a bad weather was hampering the process, the official said. He was taken to MI (a mini military hospital) Chowkibal. Seven to eight persons are still reported missing, it said.

Minister for Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Javaid Mustafa Mir directed that proper medical aid be provided to the two injured persons.
