Grinchy game: S. Carolina lottery error yielded false wins

Players were angered on Christmas day when they learned a computer glitch lead to dozens of false winning tickets. South Carolina Education Lottery officials have not said how many tickets were affected, or whether false payouts were made before the error was caught.

The S.C. Education Lottery Commission met behind closed doors Friday and chose to set aside the money for potential payouts while continuing to investigate a programming glitch that produced erroneous tickets on Christmas Day. Lotto officials told people who played that evening's game to hold on to their tickets.

"I had been promising them for years and I thought I would finally get to, and now I can't", she told WYFF News 4.

Coggins, who lives in Liberty, spent about $100 on the lottery tickets. That means the ticket would win the top prize of $500.

A programming error in a lottery game that lasted for more than two hours generated an overabundance of winning tickets, prompting the game's suspension and an investigation, officials said Wednesday. "No more than five identical play symbols should appear for a single play".

As you can imagine, that stance isn't popular with those holding winning tickets.

Cobb said her and her friend tried to cash the money the next day and they were unable to, she said 'that hurt a lot of people'.

"We didn't do anything wrong".

Another victor, 29-year-old Berry Pickens, told The State that he had taken the day off work to collect his $10,000 in winnings.

"I got a child on the way, I've got three kids at home", he said.

Instead, Pickens left empty-handed and frustrated with the state lottery.

"I've got losing tickets too, in the middle of the winning tickets", said Charleston resident Mike Cofield, 32. It's their problem when they lose, now it's your problem because they won.
